WHAT IS ZANTAC?
Zantac-a heartburn medication that was sold as both a prescription and over-the-counter medication has tested positive for a cancer-causing chemical. As a result, manufacturers have voluntarily recalled the product, and pharmacies have removed it from their shelves.
The antacid drug ranitidine, sold under the brand name Zantac, contains N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a chemical commonly used in pesticides and rocket fuel. The Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and World Health Organization classified NDMA as a probable carcinogen by. NDMA has been linked to severe liver and lung cancer.
HOW DID ANYONE FIND OUT?
Were it not for Valisure, an online pharmacy, the public may never have known about this. Their testing found “extremely high levels” of NDMA in every lot of ranitidine it tested. Valisure demanded that the FDA recall Zantac. The FDA has not performed the recall, but the maker of Zantac, Sanofi, has issued a voluntary recall. Generic manufacturers of ranitidine such as Apotex and Novartis have followed suit. Also, major pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens have pulled the product from their shelves.
WHAT DID THE MANUFACTURERS KNOW, AND WHEN DID THEY KNOW IT?
There are Peer-Reviewed studies that suggest that Sanofi and other drug-makers knew- or should have known-that the NDMA in Zantac could have caused its users these health problems. As a result, the makers of Zantac and ranitidine should have warned its customers of the risk of cancer. These will be the main arguments we will make in court.
